Blue Ray Player Reviews

Sony BDP-S370 Blue Ray Player

If anybody had said few years back that there were 25GB discs (now even more storage area) available that were capable of storing the games for the playstation or movies that could be watched in High Definition scale or facilitated the access to the internet, it would have been considered a joke. But then, the case is not so after the invention of the Blue ray players and the blue ray discs. The Blue ray players have the above said capabilities with very good extra features. In the list of blue ray players delivered to the world by Sony, the BDP-S370 is one of the recently released. This product was released on the same time the BDP S570 was brought into the market. The Sony BDPS370 blue ray player has the profile 1.1 as well as the 2.0 features and this means that it supports the access to the BD Live contents. The two biggest highlights are, one, it is very inexpensive and two, it is fast. In other words, this blue ray player is very approachable. The detailed description of the product follows below.

Sony BDP-S370 Blue Ray Player

The two ‘D’s – Design and Display:

The Sony BDP-S370 Blu Ray Disc Player has a simple appearance and does not wear any look that might make it look extra ordinarily admirable. In real, looking extremely beautiful or elegant does not matter, but it is the performance and user’s satisfaction that matters for making a product a success. Though Sony has not achieved this goal completely, they have managed to satisfy the users to some extent. The player is completely black in color with a glossy finish. Normally, black color enhances the appearance giving it a professional look. This blue ray player has the “Monolithic Design” which means that if the user’s room is filled with home entertainment products all of which are Sony’s, then the room would have an enhanced look because of the design. This player is actually slimmer, smaller and thinner. It weighs a mere 2 Kg with the dimensions 430 x 36 x 206 mm.

The LCD screen works fine and promptly displays the current usage of the player, for instance, it displays “Home” when the user is in the home menu and likewise obviously would show other topics like “Loading” or the time period for which the disc had been running. Though these are preliminary features, they are the basic ethics that a blue ray player should satisfy and Sony has indeed check listed these features. The four control buttons, power, eject, play and stop, are present near the display panel. At the right corner of the player at the front is the USB port.

Remote Control:

The remote control of the BDP-S370 is simple and easy to use with the model name RMT-B107P. This remote fortunately has the eject button unlike the remote of its predecessor the Sony BDP S360B. This is a very good news because the user does not have to get up from the couch every time to change the discs. The remote does not have anything out of the box and it can be used without any difficulty.

The Alternate Remote Control:

Using the same feature again and again might be boring. In order to avoid this feeling of getting bored of using the same remote control time and again for operating the blue ray player, the Sony has brought in a good solution. It is the use of the iPhone to operate the player. This feature is quite exciting and interesting too. But every sweet has some bitterness right? The bitterness here is that to use the iPhone touch remote control facility there are detailed and long procedures to be done. First thing, the BD Remote App has to be downloaded. Then, the user has to go to the network settings and register to make use of this feature. The registration process is also not that simple. For those who are used to doing anything in just a click, this might not be interesting. But for all iPhone lovers, who are awaiting the chance to use their iPhones at anytime possible this would be an exciting process.

Features:

DVD Upscaling:

Old DVDs of movies or shows can be watched in High Definition with the help of this DVD upscaling feature. So, all the old DVDs can be watched in HD environment since that facility is available in this blue ray player. The blue ray players are basically designed to be watched in 1080p which is the highest that any player or playstation can actually afford. The clarity would be the best in this 1080p and images or videos are visualized without any big difference between the real image and the pictured image.

No Local storage:

One noticeable flaw in this machine is that it does not have on board local storage for memory! This should have actually meant that you can not store your favorite contents. So the users have to get memory sticks by themselves since it is not included. But then, fortunately the USB port can be used to access the BD Live contents.

Bravia Sync:

Most of the Sony’s products at present come with Bravia Sync and so does this Sony BDP-S370. Best Resolution Audio Visual Integrated Architecture is one interesting feature introduced by Sony. The advantage of the Bravia Sync is that if the user has a Bravia TV connected to a Bravia sync blue ray player, the Bravia TV remote would be sufficient to operate both the TV as well as the player. This reduces the work.

DLNA:

Digital Living Network Alliance has a wide usage for the consumers of electronic goods all over the world. “Connect and enjoy”, “Connect between rooms and connect between devices”, these being their ideas, it is really tempting to use it. Though this DLNA is only in the development stage it is excellent. With DLNA, the contents can be easily shared between the electronic devices. For instance, the contents on the PC can be moved to the HD TV very easily with the DLNA. The Sony BDPS370 claims that with the firmware upgrade that would be available from mid June; the product would be DLNA Certified!

Facility to spin SACD:

The Sony BDP-S370 S370 1080p HD Blue ray player can actually spin SACDs! The specialty of the SACD or the Super Audio CD is that it provides excellent audio performance. The SACD uses the DSD format and the output given by the CD is awesome! They give the highest possible resolution that can be achieved for an audio in both stereo and surround system.

Audio and Video Output:

The important audio, video and internet connections are available at the rear side of the player as usual. Beginning from the left side, the LAN plug is available and that in turn is followed by the composite and component video output plugs. The HDMI plug succeeds it. Next to the HDMI out are the digital output plugs, the coaxial and the optical. The second USB 2.0 port is present at the back and this can be used to store any data in a drive.

The presence of the audio and video plugs is trivial. Their performance is what that matters the most. Fortunately, S370 supports most of the audio and video formats. There is on board decoding for Dolby True HD as well as for DTS Master HD Audio. This is an excellent piece of news for a blue ray player of very less price. The quality of the sound is enhanced with the surround system. Regarding the video, there is 24p cinema technology used. This means that the users can actually watch the movie as intended by the director. Visual effects would be excellent. Also, there is the Photo TV HD facility. With this, the users can watch photos with excellent clarity and marvelous color sharpness. The resolution would be increased to an unbelievable 1920 x 1080 pixels and this implies the quality of the picture. To add up to these features, there is the Gracenote with which the users can pull extra information about the movie directly from the net.

Internet Connection:

Internet has become like the breath of a person! It is really difficult these days to do any work without the help of the Internet. And now the importance of internet has spread even to the blue ray players. The wired LAN connection is available for this S370 and it can be availed by plugging in the wire to the LAN plug that can be found on the back side of the player. If there is something that the BDP-S370 has failed to achieve, it is the wireless connection! Yes, there is no inbuilt Wi-Fi connection available. This is sad news for the travelers, but then nothing is impossible these days if you can just tip-off few extra pounds. There is a UWA BR-100 802.11n dongle available for the wireless connection using which the user can access the internet wirelessly.

Sony BDP-S370 Side View

Performance:

Once the analysis of the features is done, applying them for the human usage would be the next in queue. When it is used for the first time, there will be a set of procedures to be done to set it in action. The set up is easy and not very lengthy. It can be finished quickly and then the machine is ready to be put to use. The required disc can be inserted and the movie can be watched happily. The audio and video performances are commendable and are more than satisfying for a cheap priced player. There are few areas where Sony failed to look at, probably because of the cost. But the available features are good enough that they make us forget ‘what is not there’ and make us concentrate on ‘what’s there’ in the small rectangular box. One big disadvantage is the appearance of the home menu when the user manipulates with the drive. This redirection might be a nuisance for those who were interestingly watching a movie.

LoveFilm, You Tube, BBC iPlayer:

Just watching the movies available on the blue ray discs would not be exciting. To add sugar to the ice, the S370 provides access to the videos available online. This player can actually access videos and movies available from many of the popular web services like You Tube, Lovefilm on demand, BBC iPlayer and more and more. To think that Sony is providing all these features for a budget priced player is astounding! These services can be accessed by getting connected to the internet.

Are you a film lover? Then you would be a user of LoveFilm! The users can extend their LoveFilm usage from their PCs to their HD TVs with the help of this S370. Movies and games can be rented on demand from LoveFilm by subscribing to them and then there would be no necessity to go the theatres! Everyday the users can watch any number of movies as their heart desires just by renting from Lovefilm.

The influence of You Tube in the current world of entertainment is incredible. It offers so many videos for the users and this S370 extends its application a step further by making it possible to watch those videos with ultimate clarity on a 40” TV. The users can search for their required item from the web site and can view them. It is to be added here that searching can be troublesome at times.

BBC iPlayer is another service that is provided by the BDP-S370. The users can listen to the BBC radio, watch the BBC News, or watch any of their programs at any time comfortable through this player. It is very simple and great! There is a new feature called the Catch-up TV Series that is very impressive. With the help of this feature, the users can actually watch any TV program of their interest at any time that would suit them. These are few of the appreciable features that go hand in hand with this player. The Sony BDP-S370 has lots more to offer at a very nominal price.

Parental Control:

Parents can heave a sigh of relief as there is the Parental control system. With the help of this system, the parents can not only control their children using the player itself, but also control their limit of access.

Load Time:

As said earlier, the BDP-S370 has a very fast loading time. This would be very comfortable for all the busy bees that spend their time rarely on movies and want it to be quick. There is the Quick Start Mode with which the player can be started in just 3 seconds which is amazing when compared to the normal 35 second time range. But it is to note that in Quick Start mode, power consumption will be higher. The normal loading time for any disc is in the range of 15-20 seconds which is pretty good for a blue ray player of less cost.

User Interface:

The Sony BDP-S370 uses the XMB interface. Getting the “Deja-vu” feeling? Yes, it is the same interface that runs on the PS3. Sony is now embarking this interface on many of its recent products, probably because of its popularity. This interface is easy to use and is also interesting. The main menus like the Music, Videos, Photos, Settings and the like are laid out horizontally while the sub menus under every main are laid out vertically, this makes navigation easier and users of the PS3 would have no trouble familiarizing the interface.

USB Port:

There are two USB ports, one at the front and one on the back side of the player. The presence of two USB ports is a great advantage. If the photos are stored on any hard drive they can be watched instantly on the player by simply inserting the drive onto the port. The player also reads images, provided they are of JPEG or MPEG type. This means that the users can watch their vacation photos from their digital camera right in their living room with the entire family on a HD TV.

Power:

The power consumption comes under the normal scale. For the normal mode, the player consumes 12.9W when in use and consumes only 0.15W during the power saving stand by mode.

Warranty:

The Sony BDP-S370 has the warranty coverage for about 1 year for any kind of service or repair.

Verdict:

There are lots of interesting features that the Sony BDPS370 has to offer, needless to mention, at a very low cost. But then there is no 3D functionality. This is not a very bad fall and it has so much more contained in it that makes it a very lovely kit to be used. The final conclusion is that, this player has done more than justice to the pounds that it requires to be owned by the user. There are many features that make a go once the player is put into action. So, if 3D and Wi-Fi are not your choices and only expect your machine to do a pretty good job, then here is the answer, make a Sony BDP-S370 yours.

Philips BDP3000 Blue Ray Player Review

Philips BDP3000 blue ray player is one of those budget models aimed for the economic users! Priced at a very affordable rate, this model has a unique and sleek design that is really eye catching. Well, if there is a compromise in price then it definitely means that some features have also been compromised. Blue ray players have already got well established among the people today, and this player developed by the renowned organization Philips is also trying to catch the eyes and hearts of the money saving people. Every blue ray player tries to exhibit the features in a different and higher aspect. Let us see elaborately how uniquely and excellently Philips has developed this BDP3000 blue ray player.

Philips BDP3000 Blue Ray Player

Design:

The package of the simple and stunning blue ray player contains the player, Remote control, two batteries, User Manual, Quick start guide and the Product Registration card. The design of the Philips BDP3000/05 is really good. The control buttons and the disc tray are well laid out. The player as such is purely black similar to most of the blue ray players out in the market. There is uniqueness in the design of the control buttons. At the left corner in the front, there is a power button followed by the disc tray. Next to the disc tray is the Pause button. The LCD Display follows this Pause button and the screen displays the commands neatly and precisely. Two more control buttons, the play and the stop, are positioned at the right corner on the front side. Basically, the player has been given a glossy finish that gives a richer look to it. The product weighs nearly 3 Kg and the dimensions of the width, height and depth are 435 x 58 x 227 mm respectively.

Remote Control:

The remote control of the BDP3000 player is as normal as any remote control available these days. The buttons are neatly laid out and do not give any trouble during operation. There is a home button that helps the stranded users to get back to their home menu screen.

Features:

Absence of on-board memory:

As a profile 2.0 player, it allows the users to access the BD Live contents. In that case, there should be an on-board storage of minimum 1GB to store those contents. But unfortunately, Philips has removed the local storage memory to make it cost effective. This is disappointing. But then the USB at the back side of the player can be used to store the BD live contents.

USB Port:

A single USB 2.0 port can be found on flipping back the player. This USB port can be used to store the BD Live contents. Since there is no local storage memory as said earlier, this USB port is the only storage media available. This Philips BDP3000 Blu Ray player could not play the audio stored in the USB drives earlier, which meant that, to listen to the songs one has to actually use it only in the CD or DVD media. But then, fortunately a firmware update can make the player play the contents of the drives.

Quick Start:

In the present scenario, everybody prefers everything to be done in just a second. The quick start technology loads the player in few seconds reducing the time of waiting. The power consumption in quick start mode is slightly high though.

Philips BDP3000 Remote Control

Old DVDs at HD:

If you are tired of watching the old DVDs in SD, then BDP3000 Blu-Ray Disc Player has a solution for it! Simply insert those DVDs or CDs in the disc tray and you can watch them in HD scale. This is because of the ability of the BDP3000 to convert the ordinary DVDs to the best possible range by upscaling.

24 fps:

The users can now watch the movies at 24 frames per second, which is excellent because the scenes are at their best when they are scanned at 24 fps. This means that the watchers get the director’s idea of a scene and it comes out on-screen as it was intended to be.

Parental Control:

The parental control system helps the parents to continuously scrutinize their children and stop them from using the blue ray player beyond certain limits. They can password protect the player and also control the scenes that their children can actually watch. This system is seriously a great boon for all the cautious parents.

Audio and Video output:

The rear side of the Philips BDP-3000 player encompasses all the fine output plugs necessary. Beginning from the left, there are the AV output plugs, followed by the video and coaxial output plugs. The component outputs succeed them. The arrangement of the HDMI, LAN and USB ports is quite interesting. The audio and video performances are the two most important categories of the blue ray player which attracts the users to the most! This Philips BDP3000 gives an outstanding performance in both audio and video. Majority of the formats are supported, including the Dolby True HD and DTS Digital.

Connectivity:

The wired Ethernet connection is available for accessing the internet. The BDP3000 is completely devoid of the wireless internet connection. Even if it had not been in-built, they could have at least made facilities to buy a dongle as an accessory to use wireless connectivity. But once again, because of no demand for more money, the users can not demand for a wireless connection. Ethernet is more than enough for accessing the BD Live contents, for shopping on-line and many other exciting activities.

Easylink:

Easylink links the home products of Philips that are easy link enabled. This system is similar to the Bravia sync of Sony. The users can link all the easy link products by using one single remote. Less work more gain!

Performance:

This BDP3000 blue ray DVD player is perfection personified when it comes to the performance in the video and audio output area. This blue ray player caters to the basic needs and provides them in a satisfying way. But more than that, does it offer any thing extra? We doubt so. But the users can not blame the player because given a reduction in the cost, they can not ask for more.

Power:

The power consumption during the normal mode of operation is 25 W which is acceptable for a blue ray player of lesser cost. There is always power saving methods available. So during the stand by mode, the player consumes only 0.5 W which is pretty good.

Warranty:

The BDP3000 has the warranty coverage for nearly 1 year.

Verdict:

This model truly and clearly depicts the company’s slogan “Sense and Simplicity”. Designed in a simple way, the player is sensible in that it manages all the basic functions really well. But then, simplicity in the field of performance is not acceptable. For a budget blue ray player, this BDP3000 is fine. The interface is user friendly and the audio and video performances are good. This player would be a good choice for the contented users who are simply interested in watching their favorite shows or movies in HD at a lower cost, make optimum use of the BD Live contents and do not expect anything more!

Sony BDPS360B Blue Ray Player

Blu ray players would be one topic that people would be coming across most often these days. This is because of their power packed performance that ultimately beats the ordinary DVD players. A blue ray player can perform so many tasks in many fields pertaining to media and entertainment that blow your mind off! The magic that these players can perform with the blu ray discs or ordinary DVD s vary depending on the company and the model that you buy, like the variation in the performance level of the different wands in Harry Potter(though we would not compare this BDPS360B to Harry’s amazing wand)!

Sony is one big organization that carries a tag of pride and has been producing products winning over the user’s demand in an excellent and unique way. It has been increasing the competition levels among all those well established companies and also those which are trying to get themselves established. Following the recognition that its primary blue ray player, the S350 acquired, Sony was immediately into action in producing another higher level blue ray player and there evolved a beautiful and attractive model BDPS360B.

Sony BDPS360B is one of the entry level blu ray players with a standard profile 2.0. So, it comes with bonus view facility and also an added feature, the BD Live. The presence of BD Live means that this player is capable of downloading contents from the internet. In short, it can upgrade the latest firmware and thus enhance the elegance of the player. But Sony failed to satisfy the expectations in few aspects. Users of BDPS360B would have well realized the difference between watching their favourite movies on a blu ray player and in their ordinary player in their home theatre. But that alone would not suffice. The main disappointing fact is that this Sony BDPS360B Blu Ray Disc Player does not support any of the most popular movie services like the Netflix, You Tube and Cinema Now. This news would be tragic for all movie freaks but if your passion is more towards Sony then you would definitely find your way to cope up with it. Also, the small opening for the USB port is a serial killer. Since the area for plugging in the drive is very small, not all drives would fit in that place unless they are tiny. Other than these negatives, all the other simple features are amazing and up to the standard of Sony. It has all the mandatory features encompassed in the neat, attractive and beautiful player. The additional features that have been packed are only countable but satisfactory for a new standalone player. Let us study the product in detail and analyze whether it is really worth buying.

Sony BDPS360B Blue Ray Player

Design:

The BDPS360 of Sony is all black, which makes it all the more attractive and adds to its elegance. Though the over all look is simple and conventional, it has its own original design that is admirable. The extreme left side of the player carries a power button to switch on the player. The front side has a glossy black reflective panel which opens out completely to reveal the optical drive. The LCD screen functions well and the instructions like the “open”, “home” and “load” are clearly visible at a fairly long distance. The screen is followed by two control buttons, play and stop. This is one of the issues that the users of this blue ray player have to face. Only few control buttons have been included in the front side of the player. But on the positive side, the presence of fewer numbers of controls actually makes it look less crowded.

Flipping back the player, the basic but interesting connections are available. All the output plugs are present in their respective positions. There is provision for LAN connection so that the BD live contents can be accessed and downloaded easily. The HDMI plug for connecting to high definition TVs and home theaters, line outputs for audio and video connection, coaxial and optical output plugs and eventually the USB port give their attendance to the user! This BDPS360 Blu Ray Player supports 7.1 channel surround system. Coaxial and optical output plugs are also present. Though the presence of a USB port is happy news for the users, the port is enclosed in a chamber which restricts the usage of storage devices. That is, as said earlier, all storage devices do not fit into the chamber. Only few small size devices can be used. This adds to the chagrin. The width of this box is nearly 16.9”, 2.2” high and is as deep as 8.1”. The design of the BDPS360 is thus simple and great.

Remote Control:

The remote control is included in the package of the BDPS360B player along with the plugs, warranty and user manual. The BDPS360B remote is simple and easy to use. All the buttons are laid out in a neat and comfortable manner. But the remote control gives some exercise to the user. The users can not enjoy the comfort of their couch for a long time since they have to get up time and again to change the disc. This is because of the absence of the eject button on the remote. It is not very happy news that BDPS360’s remote is devoid of this simple purpose. The value for this product goes down the hill. But there is always the universal remote which can be used to replace the actual remote but has to be bought as an extra accessory and obviously increases the cost. But then, the overall function and layout of this remote is just fine.

Features:

“Simple yet sweet” is a good quote for this player. The features that are a part of this player are only the basic essential features that a profile 2.0 should have. Anyway, let us see the uniqueness in which Sony has shown the users what BDPS360 can actually perform.

User Interface:
The Sony BDPS360B runs on the interface XMB. Sounds familiar right? Yes, this is the interface which runs on the PS3 and also many other products of Sony. The interface has an interesting layout of the icons. The primary icons are laid out horizontally which can be moved using the left and right navigation buttons of the remote. Clicking on one of the options reveals the sub menus in a vertical layout which is appealing and the choice can be made using the up and down navigation buttons. This interface seems agreeable to few while disagreeable for few others.

USB port:
The USB port is located at the rear side of the player. It can be used to store the downloaded BD live contents. Only certain blue ray discs have this facility. The USB port of the blue ray player unfortunately is covered by a black plastic lid which restricts the devices that can fit into this gap. As before said, fatter drives would not fit into the small port because of its recession.

Audio and Video Output:
The main advantage of this player is the audio and video quality. As regards video, the users can actually watch movies at 24 frames and 1080p which mean that you can truly visualize the director’s idea of the scene. It would be as clear as how the director wanted it to be. Also, with DVD upscaling, the users can upgrade their old DVD s or if the issue is that your HDTV is old, that also would be hidden by the component video output of this player as it can play the DVD s at a high quality standard definition 480p and blue ray discs at 1080i. The movie crazies have a reason to be delighted here. To get the effect of a theater, the Cinema mode gives a helping hand making the unreal seem almost real.

BRAVIA is one big boon to the users. Their work is reduced to half with this Bravia Sync. The users only have to switch on using the remote of the TV and it automatically switches on the blue ray player. Also, you can watch the photos taken during the vacation with your Bravia HD feature. The x.v. color technology doubles the accuracy of the colors that can be seen. You will find it a little difficult to differentiate between the real and the reel, as the on screen objects look almost the same as the off screen objects.

Moving to the audio performance, the audio is reasonably good though there have been contrary points to this at times. Both kinds of digital outputs, coaxial and optical, are present and it functions fairly well. The multichannel audio output takes leave and the stereo audio output presents itself. This blue ray player can decode DTS HD Audio essential and also Dolby True HD. Bit stream output is also supported. These higher type audio files can be easily converted.

Internet Connection:
The BDP S360 Blu Ray Disc Player has an Ethernet port at the back side of the player which can be used to connect to the Internet to access the contents of BD live and so firmware can be upgraded automatically. There is nothing to discuss on the topic of online streaming as none of the online movie services like the Netflix, You tube or the Cinema Now are supported.

Sony BDPS360B with Remote Control

Performance:

It is obvious that performance would be the most important subject under study. Given the countable features, they were immediately put into test and the result was an “average” regarding the load time. It took an average of 23 seconds for a movie to get loaded but it can be reduced to nearly 6 seconds with the Quick start option. Though this is a “blessing in disguise”, this disguise requires the compensation of power. The power consumption increases with the Quick start mode. But for those who want to watch movies with rapid load times, this would be no deal. And for parents who want to check the rating of the movie and keep an eye on the contents their children watch, there is the parental lock system. This gives a sigh of relief to the users.

Power Supply:

The type of power supply is internal for this BDP S360. The power consumption is about 22 W during operation mode and 0.19 W during normal stand by mode.

Warranty:

The warranty provided for this blue ray player is 1 year for both parts and labour.

Verdict:

Sony offers this exquisite, stylish outfit to the users at a very reasonable rate. The design is attractive and elegant and offers features that are restricted to a certain level. If it had broken the limitations, this product would have definitely been a success. Yet, people who have a simple mindset and are on the look out for a blue ray player that can just play movies at a comparatively good quality, then they could go in for this one. Thus this BDPS360 has taken just one big leap from the ordinary DVD players. Though this leap makes a huge difference and enhances the quality of audio and video compared to a normal DVD player, it is still an amateur. This blue ray player has only crossed one lapse. Unfortunately, many other blue ray players ventured a longer leap leaving this player stranded in the middle.

LG BD390 Blue Ray Player

One incredible discovery for the people who are more into the field of entertainment, media and games is the discovery of Blu Ray Players. Blu ray players are the improved and higher versions of ordinary DVD players. They are one of the most interesting, innovative and creative discoveries by the technologists. The job of technocrats is very similar to the excavations by the archaeologists, except that while the archaeologists research on history, the technocrats research on the new future. The more they search or experiment, the more they get and when the LG Company was on the look out for a BD player that would top the list of other players of the same kind, the result was the BD390.

Do you get the feeling that you are actually in the movie (as in, the scenes are really happening!) while watching it in a home theatre? Or do you rather get the feeling that the songs and videos are so stupendously clear to your ears and eyes? Then you must be using LG BD390 because, the clarity level of the videos and audibility of the music in this BD390 is relatively high. LG indeed receives a good applause for its new launch! Currently, LG BD-390 is the most renowned BD player. It has all the features of its predecessors along with additional attributes of good quality that makes it the most sought after product. It has multiple properties (yes, in addition to the common ones that a BD Player ought to have!) that makes it acquire a unique position among the other BD Players. The BD 390 supports Wi-Fi and even has an onboard memory of 1 GB! Amazing right? These are only few gifts that have been opened. Read further if you are interested in knowing all the surprises that LG has in store for the buyers of BD390 and then check out whether this baby rocket soared high into the sky and landed safely or not!

LG BD390 Blu Ray Player

Design and Ports:

The BD390 Blu Ray Disc Player has a stylish yet traditional, ordinary yet out of the box and traditional yet classy appearance. This rectangular box looks like a simple gift box with a pleasing and amiable wrapper upon it. BD390 has a width of 17″, depth of 10.9″; height of 2.2 inches and weighs about 6 pounds. The box is glossy black in color with a thin layer of silver topping that gives a posh and elegant look to it. Though this model’s design is said to have been “copied” from Sony, it has its own uniqueness with commendable features that crosses the horizons. Starting off with the front side of the player, the extreme left top of the player has a power button, on pressing which the panel opens out to reveal the optical drive. The LCD screen gives fairly bright messages to the user. This screen is succeeded by the four control buttons, namely, play/pause, stop, forward and reverse.

Then comes an exciting feature, the extreme right end of the player carries a USB 2.0 port covered by a removable plastic lid. The presence of a USB means that videos or songs can be dexterously played by just connecting the drive directly to the port and then the BD begins to play. But then, real surprises await the users at the backdrop only. The extreme left end of the back side has a power supply plug followed by video and audio out plugs. Then digital and coaxial plugs, for connecting to speakers, budge in to acquire their places beside the video and audio output plugs. The HDMI cable (for connecting to HD TVs) and the LAN plugs are also present. LAN is used for connecting to the internet. The biggest success of this model is the presence of 7.1 channel audio outputs. This actually means that the decoding of most of the commonly used audio type files is possible. Thus LG offers a good deal of satisfying features in this blue ray player.

Remote Control:

LG has included certain accessories along with the player. As soon as the user opens the box they would find a small accessory box containing the Remote Control, cables, installation CD, warranty card and user manual. LG BD390 remote control is very easy to use and is compatible. The most commonly used buttons like the menu, Replay, play/pause, etc., are present at the top so that these buttons can be used without any trouble. The concept of hiding few keys at the bottom is to avoid the over crowding of keys as it might actually lead to the user pressing the wrong button in hurry. The only problem is that even volume controls and numbers are kept hidden, that the user eventually gets irritated trying to open the hard slider as it does not slide down easily, making it all the more difficult. Other than this small issue, the fancy remote control works well and is classy.

LG BD390 Remote Control

Amazing Features:

LG is one of those well established companies that sell electronic goods of sufficiently high quality. So obviously, the expectations mount up among the users. But then, LG successfully managed to satisfy the users 100%. There are no big issues with this model except for few minor problems. Blu ray discs can actually store contents 5 times than that of trivial DVD s. This obviously means that the features in blu ray players would also be equally high. In that case, how did this BD390 manage to survive?! Let us see the list of innumerable features that have been included in this player.

Profile, Interface and Firmware Uptating:
LG BD-390 Blu Ray DVD/Disc Player has a standard Profile 2.0 and also BD-live. So it has all the features that a profile 2.0 has to satisfy, for instance, internet connectivity, the ability to provide good picture-in-picture quality, good audio and video decoders and 1 GB of onboard storage. The 1GB local storage memory is very useful since there would be no necessity to delete any files if the speed becomes slow. BD live is a feature that facilitates the usage of accessing the internet. Also, the users can store certain amount of files in the player and play them without connecting to the net again (because of 1 GB memory storage). This is a good attempt which no company producing blue ray players has so far tried. It is not just an attempt for LG, but it is the fruit of their tree of hard work!

The Home menu in BD390 has many options like the Movie, Photo, Music, MyMedia, NetFlix, Cinema Now, You Tube and Setup. The interface is excellent, very user friendly and eye-catching. The settings menu contains various options like Display, Language, and Audio, Lock, Network and few other setting options. The user can change the settings as per his/her amendments and interests. One main advantage is the inbuilt capability to upgrade the firmware. Since connection to internet is made possible, either wireless or through LAN, updating the firmware is very much easy and comfortable. The firmware gives options for automatic updating as soon as it gets connected to the network. So you would no longer have to face the problem of some discs not playing.

The Choice Between WI-FI and Ethernet:
For internet connection, the network option can be used. Connection can be either wired or wireless. Wireless connection to the internet can be achieved through Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is one of the latest technological developments that finds application in many of the electronic devices. BD390 supports Wi-Fi 802.11 protocol. So internet access will be swift and easy. But there have been complaints that using Wi-Fi is difficult at times. For users with these complaints, LG has also provided wired LAN connection. When the speed is very slow, the users can comfortably shift to the wired mode. The protocols available are IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi), IEEE 802.11n (draft), IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), IEEE 802.3u (Fast Ethernet). Connecting to the internet is not at all a hard task. The steps are very clear and easy. Thus the availability of internet connection takes the blue ray players a step higher than the computers as the users can watch right in the living room.

Cinema Now, Netflix and You Tube:
Gone are the days when movies were watched in theaters! It has become a common practice to watch movies either in home theaters or online. Services are offered by Cinema Now, Netflix and You Tube in selling, renting or watching online movies or shows. The basic requirement to share movies via these services is internet connection. So it is obvious that LG BD390 provides these services to the users. But are these services meritorious? And which one of these services is par excellence?

If you are interested in renting movies, then Cinema Now is a good choice. The users would be delighted as they can watch a number of movies on the basis of “pay-per-view”. But, it seems like Cinema Now is not an up to date service center. Many new movies are absent from their library. The users are not to be totally disappointed since new movies are being added constantly and it is hoped that new movies will be available for the user’s feast! The users can actually chose a movie of their choice by just clicking the movie and then buy it. HD movies from Cinema Now are not up to their expectations.

Subscribe to Netflix and you will never regret! Netflix provides amazing number of movies, television programs and shows to its users endlessly. The users can feel the joy of watching movies right in their home. With BD390, computers would no longer be necessary. The minor disputes with this Netflix are vanishing every now and then because of the additions made to their library especially after Netflix signed a deal recently with Disney and CBS.

You Tube is one of the widely used services among people. Earlier, computers were the only source of these web sites. But then, now, if you need to watch videos, songs, episodes of any TV shows or trailers of movies in the bigger screen of your home theatre at the coziness of your couch, you can do it easily if you have a BD390 at home. There are options to facilitate the easy buffering of videos. So enjoy the endless access to internet and their services with BD390. You would definitely realize that your home theater would never be complete without a BD player, especially, LG’s BD390. You will have no problem even if you are a novice because the setup procedure is simple and easy! You can watch “top viewed”, “recently viewed” and featured videos, “currently viewed” videos and also videos related to the topic of search. As usual, the size of the video is basically small and can be maximized to fit the entire screen, however big it might be. LG assures the quality or resolution of the video to be equally good even if watched on big screens.

Remarkable Audio and Video Functioning:
Do you want to play old DVD s or DVD s which does not have HD? No worries. With BD390, you can actually “remix” them, that is, they can be converted to HD using settings options and making the required changes. The users can watch with the full effect of watching it in a theatre by changing the mode to Cinema Mode. Also, as said earlier, with DVD up-scaling old ordinary DVD s can be played to their maximum HD quality. BD 390 can even play files of high resolution, that is, decoding is easier. This means that this player supports Dolby and other such high and rare file types. The resolution is a full HD 1080p and so it gives a power packed video and audio performance. Since 7.1 channel outputs are available, this player supports surround sound with latest technologies, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Advanced Digital Out. The audio formats that are supported by this player are mp3, JPEG even DTS formats, XviD, DivX, DivX HD and Nero Digital. So the users do not have to worry about the type of audio file. With DLNA certified media, you can positively access the photos, videos and all types of media files from your PC through MyMedia. The decoding of Dolby HD to AV receiver is also easily performed. All HD formats can be outputted through HDMI or through 7.1 audio outputs USB is a boon for the users because most of the formats that are supported by BD390 can be played by just connecting to the port.

Execution and Performance:
When the power button is on, the DVD can be inserted and the movie or video can be watched with crystal clarity that too with very less loading time! The time interval between loading of the disc and playing is immensely small which adds to the delight of the users. You do not have to wait for a long time for the disc to get loaded that you actually loose the interest of watching the video by the time it begins. The time of waiting is very minimal. LG assures the user clear and colorful video output. To listen to songs from any other media, as said earlier, it can be connected to the USB port and can be listened without any issue with good clarity.

Front and Rear view of LG BD390

Power:

The type of power supply for BD390 Blu Ray DVD Player is internal with a power consumption of 21 watts which is very nominal for a device which can perform stupendous tasks at amazing speed of lightning.

Warranty:

The warranty offered for this exquisite and unique blue ray player is 1 year. The 1 year warranty is for the parts. If any of the parts of the player go wrong or die away within 1 year of buying the product, LG would either replace it with a new piece or repair the same old one. The labour warranty is extended only up to 90 days of purchase.

Verdict:

After reading through all the features of this wonderful player, you might immediately feel like rushing off to the nearest electronic store to get LG BD390 right? But tarry a little, there is something we have not discussed yet, the cost. It costs as much as Sony PS3 which is devastating. The HDMI cable is not provided by LG. So, the user has to buy the cable separately if need arises. Though this seems to disappoint, all the other incredible and excellently made up features hide up this fact. The price tag scares away the interest of the users in buying the product. But then, truly, it is worth the cost. LG has crossed majority of the hurdles that its predecessors faced and has truly reached the skies.

It has so many features that flare it up higher than any other blue ray players in use so far. It is a multi facet device which has applications in the field of media, entertainment and gaming too. It has all the credentials that a BD player with a profile 2.0 ought to have. It has Wi-Fi, USB port, inbuilt storage of 1 GB and what not; it even has 7.1 channel analogue outputs. So if you are unmindful of the cost and only expect outstanding performance and top class design, then there is no need to stop now. Purchase the LG BD390 right away and enjoy the unlimited resources for infinite time limit.

Sony BDP-S5000ES Blue Ray Player Review

Sony has taken a bold decision and launched higher end Blu ray disc player in the market with Sony BDP-S5000ES. It is a pure breed, made to deliver limitless audio and video quality in a sophisticated fashion. This blu ray disc player is large and heavy with robust built quality. It is built with dedicated components and has ability to support the latest blu ray specifications and advanced image processing facility. Though the blu ray market is not fully accomplish DVD player market, Sony keep launching advanced blu ray disc players targeting niche segment of the consumer electronic market.

Whether it is lower end player or higher end blu ray player, Sony has firm strategy to accomplish the market share. Sony BDP-S5000ES is the premium end in the blu ray player spectrum and one of the most expensive home theatre rigs. There is lot of difference when a blu ray movies is played in cheaper blu ray player and higher end players. And for those who are discerning enthusiast for ultimate audio and video, Sony BDP-S5000ES is pleasant surprise. Let’s get into more detail and see what it has that really mesmerise us.

Sony BDP-S5000ES Blu-Ray Player

Design:

This Sony BDP-S5000ES blu ray player weighs 10kg that is twice the weight of normal blu ray player and has surprising size, which struggles a little in getting into shelf where other fully equipped player would easily occupy. This large sized blu ray player is three rack spaces tall and physically significant in built quality accentuating the point of solid and reliability. It looks like a first generation blu ray player with unshakable Sony look. In order to bring the genre of robust body, this player is made with brushed aluminium instead of durable plastic finish, which you have seen in the Sony’s earlier version.

This brushed aluminium cover looks more attractive than matte finished plastic showy. This player is built in more professional way and the front face is elegantly finished with limited number of controls. There is no menu buttons or fast Forward/Rewind button and you need to control them through remote. Sony would have tried something different when designing remote control for such highly priced machine. The usability of the remote control is limited. All the connections are conveniently placed at the back of the player.

Features:

Sony BDP-S5000ES Blu-Ray Disc/DVD Player is fully equipped with high definition audio standards and has up to date upgrades in decoding mechanism. The high definition audio standards include DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. It well supports the BD-Live standards, which includes two of the most sorted out blu ray specification such as Bonus View (Profile 1.1) and BD-Live (profile 2.0). These features enable the users to enjoy contents from both online as well as from disc itself.

In order to get most out of BD live components, this BDP-S5000ES Blue Ray player has 1GB micro vault that is placed in the USB port at the back. But this port is used only for storing BD live data and you cannot store other information. This is a setback for such highly priced blu ray disc player where it can read only photos and mp3. The back space has also accommodated Ethernet port and you can only use CD/DVD to access and consume all media types, which is a drawback with this player.

You can improve the blu ray movie viewing experience with the help of wide options to setup image processing features and this impressive features are ‘HD Reality Enhancer’ and ‘Supper Bit Mapping’. The HD Reality Enhancer includes three noise reduction options setting such as ‘Enhance’, ‘Smoothing’ and ‘FGR’. All these setting works well for smooth picture edge, picture gradation and reduce the grain in the picture.

Graphic user interface:

All audio and video setup can be done by using Sony’s famous Xross Media Bar Graphic user interface. This GUI offers many options for video setup that improves the video signal from HDMI output and compensates the signal loss of analogue video cable. The audio setup involves adjustment of speaker setting that enables the analogue surround sound adjust according to the speaker position.

Connectivity:

At the back of the player has enough port connection for any input and output purpose. There is a HDMI A/V output, composite and component output along with Sony trademark S video output. Sony offers comprehensive set of audio connection in the bay with coaxial and optical digital along with 7.1 analog surround sound output. It features stereo audio outputs, 1080i Component video outputs and a USB slot along with Ethernet port connection.

Performance in Detail:

This blu ray disc player is highlighted with tangible selling point of better video quality and excellent music distribution. There are many low priced blu ray players that can deliver impressive video quality but not accompanied by good audio. If you would like to search for a player that has both the features with high importance then Sony BDP-S5000ES can do the job well.

Picture performance of BDP-S5000ES:

When you play a full length blu ray movie you can find the picture edges are sharp enough to give well defined image quality. With exact colour palette and opt contrast level, this player would bring you true picture viewing experience. The picture transition from dark hues to light hues is well defined with correct contrast level and by using GUI you can set your options for perfect hue distribution.

Audio Performance:

The extra noise reduction feature ‘HD Reality Enhancer’ has minimal importance when it comes to remove any unwanted noise. It is not that good in uncovering extra layer of noise with full details but it does its job well when try to fix any noise problem. This feature is also good at reducing MNR noise reduction. This blu ray disc player is made with on board Digital Analog Convertor (DAC) and does the better job of decoding Dolby TrueHD stream. The HD stream has lot of information than a normal Dolby sound and the full stream of HD is well decoded by this player along with receiver. The on board DAC does the job of integrated sound channels well into the sound field and it delivers powerful sound through the receiver.

Music Performance:

This Sony blu ray player is not only accentuated with excellent picture and sound quality but also better with music. You can set to hear soothing music with perfect bass level and stereo spread. The sound quality spreads in the room with more atmospheric effect and it is more appropriate and gives a majestic sweep between long and short pitch sound.

Sony BDP-S5000ES Blue Ray Player with Remote

Disk Loading Time:

Disk loading time is also an important factor that determines the performance of a player. You can avoid any inconvenience and hassle of slow loading time by choosing a blu ray player with valuable fast disc loading time that meets today’s multimedia intensive requirement. Sony BDP-S5000ES has fast mode with on and off option and when you load java heavy blu ray movie, this player would take approximately one minute 13 seconds. It is fast loading time when compared to other higher priced blu ray player. Even when the fast mode is off, Sony managed well to perform with this least loading time with one minute 26 seconds.

Verdict:

Sony BDP-S5000ES is a classy and fully equipped blu ray player with quite a lot of high end video and audio features. All those features are not that impressive and found to be an additional bonus. But this player is still highly sorted out rig that has little touch both in audio and video performance though it misses out the network.
